Shinyokohama Ramen Museum

Have you heard of Ramen Noodles? The delicious dish is served in a large bowl with noodles floating in a fish based or meat broth, flavoured with soy sauce or miso, then will have slices of pork, bean shoots or spring onion added to the top. Ramen Orginates from China.

Ramen Noodle shops are everywhere! Most are quite affordable too, there are vending machines outside the shops where you pay for the ramen and choose the style you want. Then the machine spits out a ticket that you take to the counter, a couple of minutes later your noodles are served… it’s seriously fast!

Anyway, we heard there was a Ramen Noodle Museum which instantly intrigued us, we had to visit.

Shinyokohama Museum consists of two levels, as you walk in you travel back in time to 1958… the Museum is like a Movie Set. I loved it. They chose 1958 because this was apparently a good year in Tokyo and also the year Instant Noodles were invented!

Then the Ramen Noodle Restaurants are located on a lower level, none are the same as each shop serves ramen in a style from different regions in Japan.

We chose a Restaurant as it served “mini” bowls of Ramen, they are usually so large I can never finish it. I had the pork & salt flavour and Shota the Miso flavour. Both were delicious!

Later, on our way out, we discovered that there was a Ramen Noodle named after the “Suzaki” family in Shikoku… Unfortunately Shota (& his family) do not know how to cook Ramen L

After the Museum we headed into the city to see “Florence & The Machine! Oh and we came across a Restaurant specialising in "Whale Meat"... no comment.

Stay tuned for more on Florence…
